One clear planRoute, stay and park entry

01 / Build the foundations

A good safari starts
before the first game drive.

Settle these decisions together. A lodge location affects your route; your arrival time affects your first park visit; your transport determines how much luggage you can bring.

01

Choose your arrival

Compare a road transfer with a flight from Nairobi Wilson Airport. Use your confirmed accommodation location to select the road gate or airstrip transfer.

02

Match the stay to the trip

Stays inside the national park, outside its boundary and in neighbouring conservancies have different access arrangements. Establish where you will sleep and where each activity takes place.

03

Know what is included

Separate accommodation, meals, vehicle, guide, transfers and park entry when reading a quote. Check the currency, travel dates, guest count and whether charges are per person or per vehicle.

02 / The journey

Getting there, made clear.

03 / Make room for the experience

Give arrival its own space.

Plan your visit around usable safari time, rather than calendar days alone. A late arrival followed by an early departure leaves little room for a game drive.

Write down your arrival, departure and the drives included between them. For a road itinerary, account for the journey both ways. For a fly-in stay, include check-in, the flight routing and the airstrip transfer.

  1. Start with fixed commitments.International flights, onward travel and leave dates define the available window.
  2. Place transfers before activities.Keep the arrival journey and the first game drive as separate itinerary items.
  3. Leave room for conditions.Rain, traffic and flight changes can affect access. Confirm the journey for your actual date.
  4. Keep expectations realistic.Animal sightings and clear views of Kilimanjaro are natural conditions, not bookable guarantees.

04 / Before you travel

Park entry and Kenya entry
are different arrangements.

National park entry

Use the current KWS Amboseli information and official payment link to check your visitor category and entry charges. Have the identification supporting that category available. A lodge booking or flight ticket does not, by itself, establish that park entry is included.

Ask for park fees to be identified in your safari quote, together with the visits they cover. If your stay is outside the park, clarify the planned entries before accepting the itinerary.

International arrival documents

Check your eligibility and exemptions on Kenya’s official Electronic Travel Authorisation portal before international travel. Park admission is not an immigration document, and this website does not process government entry permission.

Keep identification details consistent across reservations. Save your confirmed itinerary, accommodation contacts and transfer instructions where you can access them offline.

Arrival window: KWS publishes gates opening at 06:00 and closing at 18:00, with overnight stays distinguished in its guidance. Agree daytime arrival with your accommodation; an overnight booking is not a reason to assume unrestricted late gate access.

05 / Pack for the journey

Keep it useful.
Keep it manageable.

Your transport sets the luggage limit. AirKenya publishes a 15 kg total allowance, including hand luggage, in soft-sided bags. Check the operating carrier’s rules for your actual ticket; an international-flight allowance does not carry over automatically.

  • Identification, travel confirmations and entry-payment records.
  • Camera, binoculars and charging equipment kept accessible.
  • Drinking water, sun protection and practical layers for the vehicle.
  • Personal medication and individual pre-travel health advice from a qualified clinician.
  • Offline directions to the confirmed gate, lodge or airstrip meeting point.
  • A bag meeting your carrier’s weight and dimension rules.

Useful answers

Before you set off.

Where should I start when I plan my visit?

Start with travel dates, arrival point and accommodation location. Confirm the route, transfers, park entry and included game drives. Our Getting There guide explains the road approaches and Wilson Airport flights.

Is this the official national park website?

No. Amboseli Park is an independent safari planning and enquiry website. KWS is the primary source linked here for published park access, entry and visitor rules. Government payments and Kenya entry authorisation use their own official services.

Does staying near Amboseli include park entry?

Check the written inclusions. Accommodation, conservancy activities, national park entry and transfers should each be identifiable in your quote.
