01 / Nairobi to Amboseli by road

Two approaches.
Three main entry gates.

KWS identifies Iremito, Kimana and Meshanani as road access gates. Pick the approach using your accommodation’s confirmed directions. Navigating to a generic Amboseli pin can take you to the wrong side of your stay.

Emali approach

Via Iremito Gate

204 kmKWS published Nairobi route distance

  1. Take the Nairobi–Mombasa road to Emali.
  2. Turn onto the Emali–Loitokitok road.
  3. Follow the signed turn towards Iremito Gate.

Use this route when it matches your accommodation’s confirmed access directions.

Emali & Kimana approach

Via Kimana Gate

Via KimanaContinue along the Loitokitok road

  1. Travel from Nairobi towards Emali.
  2. Continue on the Emali–Loitokitok road to Kimana.
  3. Follow park signs towards Kimana Gate.

Check whether your accommodation is reached before or after the national park entrance.

Namanga approach

Via Meshanani Gate

220 kmKWS published Nairobi route distance

  1. Take the Nairobi–Namanga road.
  2. At Namanga, join the approach to Amboseli.
  3. Continue to Meshanani Gate.

KWS describes tarmac to Namanga, then a murram section to Meshanani. Allow for a slower final approach.

Distances are KWS route figures, not a live calculation. Pickup address and final destination affect the total. Map links open directions; they do not certify current road conditions.

02 / Choose the destination precisely

Your gate follows
your accommodation.

Getting there is easier when your driver, accommodation and itinerary all use the same entry point. Confirm the property’s location and whether reaching it requires crossing a national park gate.

A stay outside the park may use a private access road. A conservancy stay can have a separate meeting point and activity arrangements. A map pin alone does not establish which fees apply.

Send your driver the property name, confirmed route and arrival contact before leaving Nairobi. Save the instructions offline.

Road conditions and timing

A fixed drive-time promise cannot account for pickup traffic, roadworks, weather, stops or the drive beyond the gate. Obtain a departure and arrival plan for your actual date and destination, with a buffer before gate closure.

For self-drive travel, confirm vehicle suitability and current access with the accommodation. Use established roads; an app’s shortcut is not permission to drive off-road in the park.

Inside the park: KWS sets a maximum driving speed of 40 km/h. Gate arrival is not the end of your journey to the lodge.

03 / Fly into the safari

Wilson to Amboseli.
Then a transfer to your stay.

Light safari aircraft at Amboseli Airstrip

Confirm the onward airstrip transfer separately from the flight.

AirKenya lists Amboseli among its scheduled services from Nairobi Wilson Airport. Safarilink also serves the destination. Use the operating carrier’s booking confirmation for flight time, routing and conditions.

Safari services may include intermediate stops. Confirm the arrival airstrip and the person meeting you there. Do not plan an international connection around an assumed nonstop flying time.

KWS’s park page uses “Kimana airstrip”, while bookings and local listings may use Amboseli. Send your exact flight and airstrip details to the accommodation rather than relying on the destination name alone.

Pack for the aircraft. AirKenya publishes a 15 kg total allowance, including hand luggage, in soft-sided bags, with separate dimension guidance. Arrange any excess baggage before travel under the carrier’s conditions. Read the operating airline’s baggage policy; your international allowance does not carry over automatically.

04 / Connecting your journey

JKIA and Wilson
are separate airports.

An international arrival at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport does not place you at Wilson’s safari-flight terminal. A connection requires immigration and baggage procedures where applicable, a road transfer and domestic check-in.

Safarilink identifies its base as Wilson Airport on Langata Road. Confirm the airline terminal or meeting point; “Wilson Airport” is not a complete pickup instruction.

Provide your international flight number and arrival date before choosing a domestic departure. A workable connection allows for the carrier’s actual check-in deadline and road transfer.

From another safari area

KWS identifies a road link between Tsavo West and Amboseli through Kimana Gate. Establish the previous night’s and next night’s properties before setting a multi-park transfer schedule.

For a Tanzania connection, confirm the border crossing, vehicle arrangements and entry documents as a complete journey. A Kenyan domestic flight or park booking does not include cross-border formalities.

Your transfer confirmation

  • Pickup date, time and precise meeting point.
  • Driver or transfer-provider contact.
  • Destination and agreed gate or airstrip.
  • Park-entry and vehicle-charge inclusions.
  • Arrangements for a delayed arrival.

05 / Ready for arrival

Check the essentials
before you leave.

  1. Confirm the approach.Use property directions and an agreed gate.
  2. Check the arrival window.KWS publishes 06:00–18:00 gate hours. Confirm overnight-stay access arrangements directly; do not assume unrestricted late entry.
  3. Keep records ready.Have ID, accommodation details and entry-payment confirmations accessible.
  1. Separate transfers and drives. An airstrip pickup is not automatically a private safari vehicle for the whole stay.
  2. Prepare for your transport.Check vehicle arrangements, luggage rules and personal essentials.
  3. Share changes promptly.Give your accommodation and transfer provider updated flight or arrival details.

Getting there / frequently asked

The details travellers ask about.

How far is Amboseli from Nairobi?

KWS publishes 204 km via Emali to Iremito Gate and 220 km via Namanga to Meshanani Gate. These are route figures, not a personalised door-to-door distance.

Which airport do Amboseli flights leave from?

The scheduled safari services described here depart from Nairobi Wilson Airport. Connecting from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport requires a road transfer and sufficient check-in time.

Can I drive directly to my accommodation?

Use directions confirmed by the property. Confirm the gate, any private access road and applicable park entry before setting off.

Is a flight ticket enough to reach the lodge?

Establish the airstrip meeting point, transfer vehicle and booking inclusions separately. Send your exact flight details to the accommodation.
