Plan the whole fly-in journey
Amboseli flights
and airstrip transfers.
A flight can reduce the road portion of your safari, but the booking needs more than “Nairobi to Amboseli.” Match the departure airport, exact landing, baggage and lodge pickup before you buy. The national park and neighbouring sanctuaries are different arrival points.

Start with the right Nairobi airport.
AirKenya’s safari operation uses Wilson Airport. Wilson and Jomo Kenyatta International Airport are separate airports, so a Nairobi international arrival can require a road transfer before a safari flight. Include immigration, baggage collection, the transfer and your operating carrier’s check-in deadline in the plan.
AirKenya and Safarilink are carrier starting points for checking current services. Use the actual ticket and carrier confirmation for dates, routing, operating airline and departure terminal. This guide does not promise a daily frequency, fixed fare or direct flight for every date.
When comparing road and air, count the full door-to-lodge journey, including Nairobi transfers and the arrival vehicle. The Getting There guide covers the road alternatives.
Confirm the landing, not just the destination.
| Arrival description | What the primary evidence establishes | What to confirm |
|---|---|---|
| Amboseli National Park airstrip | Operators describe a national park landing with onward lodge transfers. | The exact strip on the flight confirmation, pickup vehicle, transfer and park admission. |
| Kimana Airfield in Kimana Sanctuary | Angama identifies its Sanctuary airfield separately from the national park landing. | Whether your flight serves this landing and your accommodation can collect you there. |
| Chyulu Hills or another regional landing | Angama also describes a Chyulu Hills arrival as a different transfer option. | The booked property's actual journey from that landing; a regional airstrip is not automatically convenient for the park. |
A naming ambiguity to resolve: KWS currently calls the park’s strip “Kimana airstrip,” while Angama names Kimana Airfield in the Sanctuary separately from Amboseli National Park. These descriptions do not establish that the two landings are the same. Have the carrier and receiving lodge agree the exact landing identity in writing. We have not assigned airport codes or coordinates from these descriptions.
A charter to a private airfield requires its own operational and receiving arrangements. Do not assume a private landing is available to every visitor or that a scheduled seat can be bought to every regional strip.
Pack for the safari flight.
AirKenya’s published policy allows 15 kg in soft-sided bags, including hand luggage. Its checked-bag guideline is 60 × 45 × 33 cm. Personal carry-on items form part of that total, rather than a separate international-style allowance.
Safarilink’s FAQ also says its 15 kg allowance includes hand luggage and explains why soft bags suit small aircraft holds. Apply your operating carrier’s current ticket rules; do not combine the allowances of two airlines.
Weigh camera gear and the bag itself. If you need extra capacity, arrange it before departure: paying excess at check-in does not establish that space is available. Ask about storage and retrieval at Wilson if your journey returns there. For mobility equipment or other special items, get handling arrangements confirmed before ticketing.
Allow room for connections and stops.
AirKenya’s conditions explain that safari services may stop at other scheduled destinations and that departure times or the carrier can change for operational, weather or safety reasons. A ticket to Amboseli is therefore not a guarantee of a nonstop routing.
Have one itinerary show the international arrival, domestic check-in, safari flight, airstrip pickup and first planned activity. Ask who handles a missed connection and what changes cost, especially where tickets are separate. Avoid building a crucial onward commitment around an assumed flight duration.
A coast or multi-park connection needs the same check. Establish every sector and any Nairobi airport transfer instead of assuming “fly-in safari” means a direct onward flight. Our safari collection shows the journeys we can plan; availability still needs confirmation for your dates.
Ask for one complete fly-in quote.
- Travel dates, passengers and the operating carrier for each sector.
- Exact departure airport, landing identity and check-in instructions.
- Baggage allowance, excess arrangements and any stored-luggage collection.
- Lodge pickup, transfer basis and whether it is charged per person or vehicle.
- Accommodation, meals, shared or private drives and permitted activities.
- National park and conservancy charges, taxes and cancellation terms.
Compare this complete total with a road itinerary on the same dates and accommodation basis. A flight ticket, a room tariff and a packaged safari are different purchases. See how to compare safari costs.
Connect the whole journey.
Share your arrival flight, travel dates, lodge preference and onward destination so the safari includes the transfers you actually need.
