Nairobi → Amboseli
From the city to the elephant plains
Your driver-guide collects you from your Nairobi hotel in the morning for the road journey to Amboseli via the Nairobi–Mombasa highway and Emali. The drive crosses the Athi plains before the landscape opens towards the Amboseli basin. A comfort stop breaks the journey; road travel normally takes around 4–5 hours, with additional time for traffic, park formalities and the final approach to the lodge.
On arrival, have lunch and settle into your selected camp or lodge. Your guide briefs you on the afternoon route, wildlife-viewing etiquette and the park's wetland and grassland habitats. There is time to freshen up and rest before your first game drive.
The afternoon drive covers the open plains and wetland margins, introducing Amboseli's elephant country. The principal viewing subjects are elephant families, grazing zebra and wildebeest, with buffalo around the wetter grasslands. Your guide stops to explain feeding behaviour, herd relationships and the role of the swamps as a dry-season water source. Open sections provide landscape photography opportunities, including Kilimanjaro when the summit is clear. Return to the lodge before park closure for dinner and your first night in Amboseli.
