Choose the entrance with your stay

Amboseli park gates
and arrival planning.

The right gate is the one that fits your confirmed accommodation and approach route. Choose it with your driver before setting off, rather than navigating to a broad “Amboseli” search result. This guide covers the three road gates named on the current KWS park page.

Three KWS-listed road gates.

Approaches described by KWS; confirm the route for your actual stay

IremitoVia Emali from the Nairobi–Mombasa road, then the Emali–Loitokitok road and park signs.Discuss when approaching from the Emali side; confirm the continuation to your lodge.
KimanaContinue towards Kimana shopping centre on the Loitokitok road, then follow park signs.Match an eastern approach to the property's actual location.
MeshananiVia Namanga, with the final Namanga-to-gate section described as murram by KWS.Check the final road conditions and suitable vehicle with your driver.

These are KWS’s current public access descriptions, not a claim that no other operational access point exists. We do not publish an unverified gate as an ordinary visitor entrance or use a private property entrance as a substitute for a national park gate.

A shorter map line may be the wrong arrival.

Give your driver the booked lodge name and confirmed arrival instructions first. An inside-park stay requires the route beyond the gate; an outside camp may be reached before park entry. A conservancy entrance can be a different destination entirely.

Get a written route that identifies the main-road turn, intended national park gate and final meeting point. If a navigation app offers an unfamiliar shortcut, have the driver or receiving property check it. Road surface, rain and access restrictions can make a route unsuitable even where a map draws a connection.

The broader Getting There guide compares road and air arrival. Use the inside-versus-outside comparison before deciding whether the first destination should be a lodge or the park.

Prepare the gate stop before departure.

Confirm opening and arrival arrangements with your operator for the travel date. Leave space for entry formalities in the day’s plan. A late departure from Nairobi should not be treated as permission to arrive after normal access hours.

  • Carry identification supporting the visitor category used in your booking.
  • Keep the official payment confirmation and operator itinerary available offline.
  • Clarify whether the quote includes visitor and vehicle charges.
  • Agree who handles admission and what to do if the route or arrival changes.
  • Retain the lodge and driver contact details for the final approach.

Our entry-fees guide explains the current tariff categories and official payment route. Use the service linked by KWS, and verify the booking details before paying.

Plan park visits around an outside base.

If you sleep outside the boundary, ask whether the day uses one continuous park visit or exits between drives. A lodge lunch and an afternoon return can change the entry plan. Ask the operator to show how admission is allowed for rather than assuming a receipt gives unlimited re-entry.

For a short stay, compare the route from the property to the gate with the usable game-drive time. The closest gate name in a listing is less useful than the actual pickup and drive arrangement. See how many days to allow and compare verified accommodation options.

Gate questions.

Which gate should I use from Nairobi?

Choose it around your accommodation and confirmed route. KWS describes approaches through Emali and Namanga; a general Nairobi starting point does not select the best gate for every stay.

Is Kimana Gate the same as Kimana Sanctuary's entrance?

No single arrival instruction should be assumed from the shared name. Specify whether you are going to the national park gate, a sanctuary, a lodge or an airfield, then confirm the meeting point with the receiving operator.

Can I rely on a fixed gate-to-lodge time?

Use a date-specific estimate from your driver or accommodation. Conditions, stops and gate processing affect the journey; this guide does not guarantee transfer times.

Can I change gates during the safari?

Discuss the route and admission consequences with your guide before changing the itinerary. Do not assume a different gate makes a new entry free or that every road is suitable for your vehicle.

Arrive with a clear route.

Tell us where you start and where you want to stay. We can include the approach, park visits and onward transfer in your safari plan.
