Travel light, arrive prepared
What to pack
for Amboseli.
Pack for your booked transport, accommodation and activities. A small set of practical layers, dust protection and well-organised essentials is more useful than a different outfit for every drive. If a safari flight is included, establish the baggage limit before choosing your bag.

A compact starting list.
| Group | Pack or arrange | Check first |
|---|---|---|
| Clothes | Light layers, a warm outer layer, practical trousers, comfortable shoes and a hat. | Weather, laundry turnaround and any confirmed walking activity. |
| Personal essentials | Toiletries, personal medicines, sun protection and your usual insect protection. | Individual health advice and transport restrictions where relevant. |
| Viewing and photography | Binoculars, camera, spare storage, lens cloth and dust cover. | Total baggage weight and available vehicle space. |
| Travel organisation | Required identification, booking details, pickup contacts and charging equipment. | Entry-category documents, confirmed meeting point and socket/charging provision. |
| Daily drive bag | Reusable water container, a layer and the essentials needed for that outing. | How drinking water is supplied and where personal items can be stored. |
KWS’s visitor checklist includes drinking water, a camera, binoculars, sunscreen, insect repellent and a first-aid kit. Agree who supplies shared essentials with your operator. A lodge safari and a self-catering camping trip require different equipment; do not carry cooking or camping gear for a booking that supplies it.
Use layers and repeat the useful pieces.
Choose clothes you can sit in comfortably for an outing and add or remove a layer without unpacking the main bag. Bring a warm layer for cooler departures and a light outer layer suited to the weather forecast. Simple, easily combined pieces keep the bag manageable.
Comfortable closed shoes are a useful default. If you have booked a guided walk, ask that operator what footwear and clothing the particular activity needs. Do not buy specialist hiking equipment just because the destination has a viewpoint or a walking experience somewhere in the wider region.
Ask whether laundry is available during your actual stay, what items are accepted and when they will be returned. A service listed by a lodge may not fit a one-night visit. Pack a change of essentials in the bag you can access during transfers, then avoid carrying unnecessary duplicates.
Pack to the operating airline's rules.
AirKenya’s published policy sets a 15 kg allowance in soft-sided bags, including hand luggage, with separate dimension guidance. This is an AirKenya example, not a universal allowance for every flight. Check the carrier and conditions on each booked sector, including any onward coast journey.
Weigh the complete load with the camera, daypack and personal items included. An international airline’s allowance does not automatically apply to the safari flight. Arrange excess baggage with the carrier in advance; do not assume it will travel because you are willing to pay at check-in.
If you intend to leave a larger bag in Nairobi, confirm storage eligibility, location, collection arrangements and your return route. A one-way itinerary ending at the coast needs a different solution from a return to Wilson Airport. Read our flight and airstrip guide before packing around an assumed connection.
Protect equipment without overpacking.
Use a closable bag or cover to protect camera equipment from dust during transfers. Bring a suitable lens cloth and keep spare batteries and storage organised. Choose equipment you already know how to use; a very heavy kit can be frustrating if it consumes the baggage allowance or is difficult to handle in the vehicle.
Ask your accommodation about charging points and hours, and your carrier about batteries, power banks and any specialist equipment. Follow the operating airline’s current carriage instructions. A camera accessory is not automatically exempt from baggage or dangerous-goods rules.
Save booking details and essential contacts for offline access. Carry a practical backup of the information needed to reach your booked pickup and accommodation. Keep identity documents secure rather than storing them loose with equipment you repeatedly take out.
Check the bag against the actual trip.
KWS prohibits single-use plastics in national parks. Use reusable containers and confirm how drinking water will be provided. Bring a small reusable bag for your own waste and take it back to the appropriate disposal point.
For personal medicines and individual travel-health preparation, use advice from your own qualified clinician or travel-health service before departure. This checklist does not prescribe treatment or preventive medicines. Tell your operator about practical storage or accessibility requirements through its appropriate private booking process.
Finally, check travel documents, fee-category evidence, exact arrival arrangements and the forecast. Remove equipment that no booked activity needs. Leave space to find the useful items quickly.
Match the bag to the safari.
Choose your dates and transport first, then confirm the details for your itinerary.
