A little more time in the wild

A journey shaped around the wildlife.

Combine the southern elephant plains, a Naivasha lake stop, northern Samburu and Lake Nakuru.

Wildlife enthusiasts seeking northern species alongside Amboseli and Rift Valley habitats. The itinerary below sets out each travel day, included wildlife activity and overnight stop. All departures begin in Nairobi and return to Nairobi.

Choose budget, midrange or luxury accommodation while retaining the described route and included activities. Your written quote identifies the actual properties, rooms and final price for your dates. Wildlife encounters and clear Kilimanjaro views depend on natural conditions.

Day01

Nairobi → Amboseli

Nairobi to the elephant plains

Your driver-guide collects you in Nairobi and follows the southern road to Amboseli, with a comfort stop along the way. The journey crosses changing farmland and dry country before the mountain landscape opens out near the park. Allow a substantial morning for the transfer; the chosen lodge determines the approach gate. Arrive for lunch and settle into your room before the afternoon drive.

Enter Amboseli and explore the grasslands and wetland margins on permitted tracks. Your guide watches for elephant families feeding and moving towards water, with zebra, wildebeest and gazelles on the plains. Buffalo and waterbirds add interest around the marshes, while giraffe favour the woodland edges. Pause for photographs of Kilimanjaro when cloud clears, then return to your accommodation for dinner before park closure.

Amboseli National Park

Elephants, wetlands and open plains

Leave after breakfast for a full day among Amboseli’s grasslands, acacia edges and permanent wetlands. Follow elephant movements between feeding areas and water, stopping to watch herd behaviour rather than rushing between sightings. Zebra, wildebeest, buffalo and gazelles are regular subjects; your guide also scans open ground and shaded cover for lion, spotted hyena and cheetah. Predator encounters depend on the animals’ movements.

Continue around the marsh margins for waterbirds and hippos in deeper pools. At Observation Hill, take the designated walking trail for a wide view over the basin and enjoy your packed lunch at a permitted picnic site. The afternoon drive returns through productive habitats as light changes across the plains. Your guide keeps the route within open tracks and park hours, returning to the same accommodation for dinner.

Day03

Amboseli → Lake Naivasha

From Amboseli to Lake Naivasha

After breakfast, check out and travel north through the Nairobi corridor into the Great Rift Valley. This is a long transfer day with lunch and comfort stops along the route. The Naivasha overnight breaks the journey between the southern parks and the next safari region, keeping a difficult direct Amboseli–Mara drive out of the itinerary. Settle into your lakeside accommodation and take time to unwind.

Your Lake Naivasha boat safari and Crescent Island visit are both included. They take place after arrival when conditions and available daylight allow, or after breakfast the following morning before onward travel. On the boat, watch for hippos from a safe distance and scan for fish eagles, cormorants and other waterbirds. Land at the genuine Crescent Island Game Sanctuary for a guided walk among grazing wildlife such as giraffe, zebra and antelope. The sanctuary’s admission is paid separately from the boat operator and is covered by your package. Lifejackets and the local guide’s instructions govern the lake activity; weather or water conditions can alter the sequence.

Day04

Lake Naivasha → Samburu

From Lake Naivasha to Samburu

Complete the included Lake Naivasha boat ride and Crescent Island walk before departure if they were not completed on arrival day. After breakfast and check-out, travel towards northern Kenya, crossing changing highland scenery before the descent towards the Ewaso Nyiro landscape. Lunch and road breaks are included. This is a substantial transfer day, so a reserve drive is not promised on arrival.

Settle into your Samburu accommodation and enjoy dinner. The full day ahead is reserved for the river corridor and dry-country habitats, giving time to search for the region’s distinctive wildlife without rushing the road journey. Your lodge and reserve sector are confirmed in the quote; entry into Buffalo Springs, Shaba or private conservancies is not assumed under a Samburu ticket.

Day05

Samburu National Reserve

River wildlife and northern specialists

Explore Samburu National Reserve after breakfast, working between the Ewaso Nyiro riverine habitat and the surrounding dry plains. Search for the northern species associated with this landscape: reticulated giraffe, Grevy’s zebra, beisa oryx, gerenuk and Somali ostrich. Your guide explains their adaptations while watching the river corridor for elephants and other wildlife.

Break for lunch and continue the game drive through a different circuit, scanning shaded cover and rocky ground for lion and leopard. River flow and recent rainfall shape animal distribution, so the day follows conditions rather than a fixed list of sightings. Return to your accommodation for dinner. The itinerary covers Samburu itself; no guaranteed Special Five sighting, village visit, camel ride or crossing into a separately charged reserve is implied.

Day06

Samburu → Lake Nakuru

From Samburu to Lake Nakuru

Check out after breakfast and travel to Lake Nakuru, with lunch and breaks along the road. This is a full travel day, so the itinerary keeps the main Lake Nakuru game viewing for tomorrow rather than relying on an arrival drive. Settle into your accommodation for dinner and an overnight rest.

The changing scenery links the southern elephant country with the Rift Valley’s cultivated slopes and lake basin. Your guide manages stops and the approach to your selected lodge around current traffic and road conditions. The next full day is reserved for the park’s grasslands, woodland and lakeshore, with time to search for both black and white rhino.

Day07

Lake Nakuru National Park

Rhinos and Rift Valley habitats

Spend the day exploring Lake Nakuru National Park, moving between open grazing areas, acacia woodland and the lake margin. Search for white rhinos on the grasslands and watch denser cover for the more elusive black rhino. Buffalo, waterbuck and giraffe provide further subjects, while your guide scans suitable trees and rocky areas for lion and leopard. Each encounter depends on the day’s wildlife movements.

Take lunch at your lodge or a permitted picnic area, then continue through a different section of the park. Stop at an open viewpoint to understand the basin’s shape and watch the changing birdlife along the shore. Water levels influence access and flamingo concentrations, so the route follows current park guidance. Return to your accommodation for dinner after a full day dedicated to Nakuru.

Day08

Lake Nakuru → Nairobi

Return to Nairobi

Enjoy breakfast and check out before the road journey to Nairobi. The day is reserved for the transfer, with no additional game drive scheduled before departure. This keeps time for rest stops and Nairobi traffic rather than compressing another park visit into the travel day.

Stop for lunch and comfort breaks en route, then continue to your agreed Nairobi hotel or airport drop-off. The safari ends on arrival. Share onward flight details when requesting your quote so the departure and airport buffer can be assessed against actual road conditions; a tight same-day connection is unsuitable.
